Hot Jobs

WHAT CAN I DO?

The answer is simple: anything you want! At MainStreet there are jobs that last one hour and committees you can work with for years!

The things you can do cover a wide range. Here are some examples of the things great and small that volunteers do:

  • Assist building owners with renovation plans

  • Sell raffle tickets or set up decorations at the Street Dance

  • Recruit new businesses to the Heritage Area

  • Stuff envelopes and (yech!) lick stamps

  • Help out at the Farmer's Market or Out To Lunch

  • Arrange the carriage rides at the Dickens of a Holiday Festival

Anything you can do is important. The best way to find something that works for you is to talk to a volunteer coordinator, member of the Board, or a member of staff. After just a few minutes, we'll think of something--trust us!

WHO'S ON FIRST? The order of things

To whom do I report?
Most of the project work you are involved with will more than likely be a subcommittee of one of the four standing committees. In most cases, you'll report to the chairperson of the committee or subcommittee youíre working on with any progress or questions. If you havenít been told yet, the first question you should ask is, "Whom do I check in with?"

What is the role of MainStreet staff?
Staff is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the program, and you may end up interacting with them a great deal. You can always ask a member of staff for help and information, but try to get the assistance you need from your chairperson first. Our staff members usually have a lot of pots boiling!

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY

Here are some basic guidelines to follow:

Budgets are set before a committee spends any money.

The members of a sub-committee prepare estimates of their expenses and get approval from their chairperson (initials and date) before making any purchases.

Purchases of items over $20.00 should be done using a MainStreet check. Fill out a check request form at the office and get it approved through your chairperson. Checks are usually ready in about five days.

Things happen! If you need something in a pinch, we trust your judgment.

Save all receipts.

YOUR TIME IS VALUABLE TO US!

Tracking the hours you work for MainStreet is important for demonstrating the commitment of our volunteers. Corporate contributors, new business prospects and the Village are all interested to know how much the community invests back in the Heritage Area. Volunteer hours are one of the best measures of our success.

If you are working at an event and show up for a pre-arranged shift, don't worry about tracking your hours--we'll do it for you.

If you're working on a project or committee that meets regularly or doing work for us on your own, you're the only one who really knows how much time you've spent! Please keep a record!

Your chairperson is responsible for getting Time Tracker forms to you and for collecting them.
